WORKING THE SKIES! - STEWARDESS, BEHIND THE SCENES.

Okess...now we talk about airlines business! Slalu korang fly, sedap-sedap jer korang lepak duduk atas seat kan? Tak kira laa seat economy, bussiness class or first class...wahhhh...seronok kann? Especially time kita cuti untuk gi travel yang jarak jauh ni.... But do you all tahu siapa yang paling busy behind the scenes selain dari pilot/captain yang dok busy handle plane dari sebelum start aircraft pushback hinggalah sampai time landing? Of course la airlines punya steward and stewardess... Do you know apa actuall job dorang selain dari serve F&B untuk korang?






Malaysia Airlines / Air Asia Cabin Crew
Phewww rasa tak ramai yang tahu kan...kann...kannn...Actually besar their responsibility. So last week kakikujalanjalan ada berkesempatan untuk do some simple sosial chit-chat dengan salah sorang stewardess - who also one of my friend. Motive of this un-plan sosial meeting ni adalah untuk tahu serba sedikit tentang jobscope dorang yang saya pasti tak ramai yang tahu - especially kisah disebalik tabir seorang stewardess / cabin crew.

So secara overall - "The role of an air cabin crew member is to provide excellent customer service to passengers while ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the flight. They are trained to deal with security and emergency situations which may arise and can administer first aid to passengers"


Ok lets begin with 1 situation. Let's say flight korang scheduled at 11PM from KLIA(KUL) to Osaka (KIX),  so thats mean dia dah kena keluar dari rumah dorang as early jam 7pm after packinng and do some grooming. Then, this airlines crew dah kena  siap-siap and wajib kena ada kat briefing room at least  satu jam setengah before departure/boarding.


So what the hell dorang buat kat briefing room ni?? Masa ni la this airline crews akan do/listen some briefing/checking and some preparation for safety, current issues tentang negara yang dorang nak fly tu, times GMT different bla bla bla...and bla. Dorang masa ni akan read dan study that CIQ (Custom Immigration Quarantine Form) dan isi those form. Penat tak? Hehhee..masa ni gak la akan ada session Q&A with their supervisor tentang fleet, pembahagian tugas dan study scheduled programme untuk this flight ke Osaka.  Not easy right?? Bukannya parking kereta then terus jalan masuk aircraft tau.

Then apa dorang wat after that sesion? So dorang akan proceed to aircraft laa..takkan dorang balik umah plak kan..hehehe... Pada masa ni la, all cleaners akan clean up that fleet sekiranya perlu, caterring person pulak akan refill  dan prepare semua benda yang tak cukup. In this case, catering persons akan fill up all F&B untuk this flight to Osaka. In meantime, flight crews yang lain akan check all aircraft equipments like safety jacket, air ventilation, flight lavatory...and all cross-check yang diperlukan for safety purpose untuk penerbangan ke Osaka selama 7 jam ni.


After that, then dorang akan standby la kat economy or  bussiness class based on their supervisor direction. Bukan bleh main pilih je tau nak layan class mana... But ni pun depend on situation la.

Ok, back to basic. Tak ramai yang tahu yang each plane hanya ada masa 20-30 minutes je untuk boarding session. So atas factor time ni la, all these stewards and stewardess ni la akan membantu korang untuk smoothkan boarding time ni. Jangan plak korang acah-acah artis, terhegeh hegeh masa nak masuk aircraft tu...delay kang semua payah nanti..hahaha..tak pasal-pasal semua passengger akan cemuh korang nanti. Dah tahu seat korang tepi window, sila datang or boarding awal-awal...so takder la menyusahkan orang lain yang akan kena bangun balik dari seat dorang jika korang masuk lambat.

So what happen next? Masa ni la korang akan dengar safety briefing via safety video or direct form this steward/stewardess right after aircraft push-back. So sila pay full attention okesss:

“Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to direct your attention to the television monitors. We will be showing our safety demonstration and would like the next few minutes of your complete attention.”


“Now we request your full attention as the flight attendants demonstrate the safety features of this aircraft”.


After all safety briefing completed, then pilot akan ask them do cross-check before take off after captain dapat green-light dari control tower.  Then dorang ni akan seat and buckle up kat dorang punya seat sama macam passengers lain gak.

“Cabin crew, please take your seats for take-off.”

So after a few thousand feet after take-off, that seat belt sign akan turn off (sometimes depend on current weather situation)

“Ladies and gentlemen, the Captain has turned off the Fasten Seat Belt sign, and you may now move around the cabin. However we always recommend to keep your seat belt fastened while you’re seated. In a few moments, the flight attendants will be passing around the cabin to offer you hot or cold drinks, as well as breakfast/dinner/supper/a light meal/a snack. Alcoholic drinks are also available at a nominal charge/with our compliments. (On long flights with inflight entertainment: Also, we will be showing you our video presentation.) Now, sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight. Thank you.”

Masa ni laa stewardess akan start busy untuk prepare F&B untuk korang. Perasan tak kalau short flight, dorang akan letak siap-siap headphone atas seat.  But for long haul flight, dorang akan kasik after flight take off. Why?? Ni for safety reason. First, dorang tak nak korang lalai semasa safety briefing and satu lagi sebab wayar headphone yang berselirat akan membahayakan passengers if something emergency happen! Haaa so jangan ilang sabar sangat dan desak  mintak headphone if aircraft belom take-off dan sampai certain altitude okesss...bahaya!


Then after this, dorang akan mula start layan korang yang perangai macam-macam tu kann..heheh..nak kacang lebeh la, air lebeh laaa..tukar headphone laa, mintak tukar seat la..etc ect. Dorang ni la akan layan karenah korang dengan senyuman walaupun penat. Thats their job, untuk kasik best tip top service untuk korang. So walaupun senyuman penuh di muka dorang, harap korang pun paham dorang pun ada perasaan, jangan kejer nak mengarah jerk dengan alasan kita dah bayar tiket. Tolerate sket okesss... :)

So what happen after that during korang tengah sedap-sedap rest dan zzz..?? Masa ni laaa dorang akan clear up the mess, clean-up lavatory, and prepare for next F&B sekiranya ada.... and memang dorang ni akan kejer all the way until plane landed. Jangan ingat dorang ni tido gak okesss..hehehe..


For long-haul flight, dorang ni akan sentiasa dalam keadaan ready for the next service. Crew akan repeat balik their working pattern macam diorang start the first service. Once they are done serving all the pax, crew akan kemas balik their working space and prepare for landing.

“Ladies and gentlemen, as we start our descent, please make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in their full upright position. Make sure your seat belt is securely fastened and all carry-on luggage is stowed underneath the seat in front of you or in the overhead bins. Thank you.”

“Cabin crew, please take your seats for landing.”

Ok, now dah landing. What happen next?? Dekat certain country, crew pun kena isi borang arrival macam passsengers gak. Ada certain airport they will just have to show their ID pass or passport jerkk...haaaa yang ni heybat!


Once they have arrived at the airport, crew akan tunggu their transportation. Guess what??  They will be treated like a VIP! Hahaha ada driver sendiri, ada orang tolong angkatkan bags/luggage, dapat duduk hotel yang famous kat sesetengah tempat. Paling syok, kalau hotel ada menyediakan sarapan pagi...phewww...yang ni memang terbaikkk!

So bagi certain cabin crew, dah duduk semalaman kat certain country, takkan nak duduk diam je dalam bilik. So ada sesetengah crew akan ambil peluang untuk berehat sahaja dibilik tapi ada sesetengah  tu yang kaki berjalan, akan keluar  dari bilik hotel dorang untuk explore new places. This is the time dorang akan keluar dari hotel dan pergi tempat-tempat yang menarik, pergi ke kedai makan dan cuba local foods, meet new peoples and make some new friends! Ini salah satu sebab kenapa ramai yang nak  join airlines sebagai cabin crew, sebab dapat bekerja dan travel ke merata tempat at the same time!




Okey...maybe tak ramai yang tahu yang dorang ni akan fly 2-4 tempat dalam satu hari. Kalau yang dapat long-haul flight, dorang akan fly sehari sekali..then rest kat last airport yang dorang last landed tu. Then again, dorang akan repeat same things pada keesokkan harinya. Selalunya dorang akan dapat schedule dorang in advance, so dorang dah tahu bulan depan akan fly ke negara mana.  Semuanya telah plan secara detail.


Oppss...dorang pun ada rest day cuma agak ketat jika nak dibandingkan dengan kita yang kejer opis ni. Tak leh sesuka hati nak emergency leave or MC bagai...semuanya kena well plan in advanced! Dorang kena plan cuti at least 2-3 months before dorang cuti dan tak semestinya cuti dorang tu akan di approved oleh bos-bos dorang!

Hurmm..hope korang dah faham dah apa jobscope steward or stewardess. Menarik right?? And and the same time, agak penat gak la. Kita pun kalau fly dari Osaka ke KL selama 7 jam pun dah penat right?

Overall, paling best...dorang ni akan selalu berpeluang travel ke merata pelusuk dunia..no doubt on that! So saper-saper yang muda belia yang berminat nak jadik cabin crew ni..try la cuba test apply. Manalah tau kannn.
